Last week we took a family bike ride over to park that’s on the water near our home. I’ve known of the park for many years, having seen it from boats as we passed it. This was the first time I actually stumbled upon it while on land. It was a beautiful spring day in South Florida. The temperatures were in the upper 80’s. They day was great. the ride was nice. The park was beautiful the water wasn’t too cold. We did a bit of wading and enjoyed the day. We had plenty of water and snacks. The weather being so hot I would have never associated any risk of my son catching a cold on the half hour bike ride home. I’m a man. I’m raising a tough boy. That’s what the old women would nag you about when you were a kid. The very next day he developed a cough and runny nose. He then gave that cold to my wife. I have been having flashbacks of my childhood and my grandmother forcing me to stop playing in my wet clothes so that I wouldn’t get sick. Summer colds are tough to kick. Its been almost 2 weeks they are both still sick. Plans had to be cancelled. Even though the day was great, sick kids and wives are annoying. Lesson learned. No swimming in any weather (including hot sunny days) without a change of dry clothes readily available. Even though its hot and you may be sweating, normal human body temperature is 98.6. so upper 80’s is a 10 degree difference. Anything below 99 degrees outside you better have a some freshies for your little one or they will get sick.
